This blog will contain proposals for people of all ages and tastes, from quick last-minute ideas to unique options that will make you the scariest person in the room. And, if you’re planning to celebrate Halloween at PortAventura World, we’ll tell you why our theme park is the perfect place to show off your terrifying costume. So, let’s dive right in!

Original Halloween costume ideas

If you’re looking to put together a unique Halloween costume, we recommend staying clear of the tried-and-tested spooky staples. Instead, you might be better off seeking inspiration in modern trends. Here are a few places where you can find it:

  • Popular series: find inspiration in iconic characters from trending TV series such as Stranger Things, The Walking Dead or The Last of Us. Dressing up as a character from one of these productions is a sure-fire way to turn heads and make you the most popular person at the party!
  • Legendary films: you can’t go far wrong by dressing up as a character from an iconic horror film such as REC, SAW or The Silence of the Lambs. You could also seek inspiration from scary secondary characters that appear in non-horror productions, such as the Joker from Batman! Halloween is the perfect time to pay homage to these iconic figures—just be prepared to pose for selfies!
  • Reimagined classics: there’s no reason every vampire, witch, zombie, mummy or skeleton needs to look the same. Fancy throwing on some neon makeup to elevate your costume? Great idea! What about incorporating some lights into your costume? Go for it! Can a mummy wear a hat? Absolutely it can! Can a zombie wear fluorescent colours? Yes, yes, yes! (ok, you get the idea…)

Halloween costumes for couples and groups

Halloween costumes for couples and groups can also work brilliantly when they’re underpinned by a common narrative. If you’re looking for some original costume ideas for couples and groups this Halloween, you might consider the following:

  • Jekyll and Mr. Hyde: the perfect way for best friends to turn heads at any Halloween party.
  • The Addams Family: you guessed it—a fantastic way for families to embrace the late-October fun together.
  • Ghostbusters: you and your squad won’t need to look hard to find your next target!
  • The kids from Stranger Things: a brilliant option for a group of young pals. Get your bikes ready!
  • Frankenstein and his bride: a great option for couples. And if you’re wanting to spice it up, why not switch roles?
  • Beetlejuice and Lydia: another awesome idea for couples. Just make sure you’ve got enough hairspray!
  • Ellie and Joel from The Last of Us: don’t judge a book by its cover—no zombie is safe when this dynamic duo are together!

If you’re planning on attending a party with your loved ones but have yet to decide on your family Halloween costumes, you might consider assigning the roles by age. For example, kids might wear cuter, more endearing costumes, while adults have leeway to dress up that little bit scarier. Alternatively, if you want to really break the mould, you could do things the other way around!

Kids costumes that strike a balance between creativity and comfort

When it comes to Halloween costumes for children, comfort is king. For this reason, we recommend opting for softer fabrics, lighter layers and the most comfortable footwear possible. Here are a few ideas that you might consider:

  • Renewed classics: have you ever seen a skeleton wearing fluorescent makeup, a zombie riding a scooter or a pumpkin adorned with fairy lights? Well, perhaps now is the perfect time!
  • Iconic characters: we’re sure that your kids will love dressing up as Wednesday from The Addams Family, R2D2 from Star Wars or just about any character from the cast of the Harry Potter franchise!
  • The right level of scariness: very few people find kids ‘scary’, regardless of their costume. On the contrary, the scarier they dress up, the more endearing it can be! With this in mind, there’s no reason why your child can’t dress up as Chucky, Hannibal Lecter or another terrifying character this Halloween.

Makeup and accessories to complete the costume

Good makeup can turn a simple costume into an eye-popping masterpiece. Getting the basics right can elevate any Halloween costume. For that reason, we recommend leaning heavily into pale foundation, purple eyeshadow, dark circles and fake blood.

Accessories are another way to make a costume pop. If you want to take your costume to the next level, look to incorporate capes, hats, gloves, coloured contact lenses and even fake nails into your ‘fit!

FAQs about Halloween costumes

It’s difficult to say. If we leave the classics to one side, the most popular costumes are usually inspired by popular series or movies that have been released earlier in the year. In 2025, there’s a fair chance that we’ll see a few Wednesday Addams in our park!

If you’re looking to make a costume without spending too much money, don’t fret—there are plenty of ways to do so without breaking the bank. For example, by cutting two well-placed holes in a white bed sheet you can become a ghost in a matter of minutes! Alternatively, you could rip some tears into an old black t-shirt, put on some green face makeup and—hey presto!—you’re a zombie (however, you’ll need to practice your moaning!).

As we said before, comfort is king. If possible, we recommend opting for a costume that you can complement with lightweight accessories and comfortable footwear. If you can avoid masks, even better (that’s the beauty of make up!).

We know that choosing a Halloween costume can be quite the ordeal. It needs to be comfortable enough to get you through the day, but it needs to have a certain scare factor. Whether you’re looking for a Halloween costume for a baby, children, adults, groups or couples, you’ll find some helpful tips right here in this guide!
